Voting Challenges for Retirement Community Seniors

Residents at Blakey Hall face certain barriers when it comes to voting, such as mobility issues, limited access to transportation, or health conditions that make it difficult to travel to polling stations. For some, managing the complexities of mail-in ballots or navigating the latest voting regulations can feel overwhelming. However, these challenges are not insurmountable, thanks to the multi partisan assistance team (MAT) and other measures designed to support voters in care facilities.

A MAT is a group specifically appointed by the county board of elections to help residents in facilities like Blakey Hall participate in the election process. Each team is composed of at least two members who come from different political parties, ensuring that the help provided is non-partisan, impartial, and professional. The MAT assists residents with a range of voting activities, from voter registration to requesting and submitting mail-in absentee ballots.

The services MATs offer are particularly important for those who may not be able to cast a ballot independently. They ensure that each resident’s vote is confidential and their personal choices remain secure. Whether it’s helping someone mark their ballot or simply ensuring the ballot is properly sealed and mailed, MATs provide invaluable support for residents who need a helping hand.

How MATs Help Residents Overcome Voting Barriers

For Blakey Hall residents, the assistance provided by MATs makes voting more accessible. Here are a few ways MATs help residents:

  1. Voter Registration: Residents who need to update their registration or haven’t yet registered can receive help from MATs.

  2. Requesting an Absentee Ballot: MATs can assist residents in requesting absentee ballots, ensuring they are correctly processed.

  3. Witnessing Absentee Ballots: For residents who require someone to witness their absentee ballot, MAT members can serve in this role.

  4. Marking the Ballot: If a resident has difficulty marking their ballot due to physical limitations, a MAT member can assist while maintaining strict confidentiality.

  5. Sealing and Mailing Ballots: MATs help ensure that ballots are properly sealed and mailed in time to meet election deadlines.

Important Legal Updates for 2024

Due to a 2022 federal court ruling, residents with disabilities now have even more flexibility when it comes to receiving voting assistance. While they can still request help from a MAT, they also have the option of choosing anyone they trust to assist with their ballot, such as a friend, family member, or even a staff member at Blakey Hall, provided certain conditions are met. This ruling ensures that residents can receive the help they need without unnecessary restrictions.

Making Voting Easy and Accessible at Blakey Hall

Blakey Hall is dedicated to ensuring that all residents have the chance to vote in this important election. If you or a loved one needs assistance with voting, be sure to contact the local county board of elections to schedule a MAT visit, or inquire about other available resources. By providing support and guidance, Blakey Hall ensures that every resident can make their voice heard in the 2024 election.
