Honoring Veterans: A Seabee’s Journey from Vietnam and Beyond

At Blakey Hall, we are privileged to hear the incredible life stories of our residents—stories that echo the courage, resilience, and dedication of a generation. A very similar story is that of Tom Helman, a proud U.S. Navy Seabee whose life is a testament to service, family, and hard work.

A Foundation of Determination

Tom’s journey began with a bold decision to join the Navy, where he entered boot camp ready to take on whatever challenges came his way. After completing aptitude classes, it was clear that Tom’s skills and determination made him an ideal candidate for the Navy’s Construction Battalion, more commonly known as the Seabees.

Seabees are known for their "Can Do" spirit, and Tom embodied that ethos from the very start. With rigorous training under his belt, he was prepared to take on the task of building and maintaining critical infrastructure in Vietnam—bridges, airstrips, roads, and bases—often under the harshest conditions.

Love and War

Before heading off to Vietnam, Tom married the love of his life. Just six weeks after their wedding, duty called, and he shipped out for a nine-month deployment. It was a difficult time for a newlywed couple, but letters and their unwavering love kept them connected across the miles.

Tom returned home for a brief six months, savoring time with his wife and adjusting to life stateside, only to be deployed again for another six-month tour. His commitment to service and his ability to persevere during these challenging separations exemplify the strength of both his character and his marriage.

Building a Legacy

After completing his service in Vietnam, Tom and his wife settled down to build a life together. They welcomed three children and created a loving home that reflected the values Tom had carried with him throughout his life: discipline, determination, and devotion to family.

Tom applied the skills he had honed as a Seabee to a long and successful career in construction. From small residential projects to large-scale builds, his work contributed to communities in meaningful ways. Even after his retirement, Tom’s dedication to craftsmanship and teamwork continued to inspire those around him.

A Veteran's Life Well-Lived

Now, Tom reflects on his journey with pride and humility. His life story is one of service—both to his country and to his family. Veterans like Tom remind us of the sacrifices made by so many to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

As we honor Tom, we also take this opportunity to honor our veterans at Blakey Hall, who reminded us of the importance of celebrating the lives and legacies of those who have given so much. Tom’s story is a cornerstone of the rich history and shared experiences that make our country and community so special.

Thank you, Tom, for your service and the example you’ve set for generations to come.
